Example of tile found in the chamber of Queen Philippa's apartment in the Clarendon Palace, Wilshire, England. Product common of the Wessex school. Size aprox. 5.5" x 5.5", circa 1237.

Cataloged & displayed at the British Museum.

An interesting note - the back side of tile reveals scoop marks made when clay was still pliable.

Scoop marks were made to provide greater adhesion.

English, We found this plain glazed tile fragment in a rubble heap believed to be holding the entire original floor of a 12th century church near the village of East Haddon.

 


14th Century Tiles
This collection of tiles consist mostly of English tiles nearly all of which have been cataloged by
Elizabeth Eames of the British Museum.

"Line Impressed" Tiles

How these are made:
A red terra cotta base is covered with white clay
(called "slip"),
then they are
impressed and glazed.

(difficult to distinguish),
